Published: December 20, 2008

LAKE WALES - Joe Young had a monster 23-point, 16-rebound performance, but it wasn't enough on Thursday night as Lake Wales knocked off the Sebring boys basketball team 64-60 in non-district action.

Jake Trussell had 10 points and four rebounds, while Devin Clarke added 10 points and Chris Grubb added eight points.

"It was a back-and-fourth game," said Sebring coach Princeton Harris, whose team was down by three at half and one heading into the final frame. "We missed some crucial free throws and a jumper at a time we could've changed momentum."

The Streaks took on cross-county rival Lake Placid on Friday night (see Sunday's Highlands Today for complete coverage) and will take on Lake Wales in a re-match tonight. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

"I told them they'd better be ready for today," Harris said. "It was very competitive between us and Lake Wales, so we'll be ready to go."

BOYS BASKETBALL: Palmetto 62, Avon Park 59

PALMETTO - Reggie Baity had a game-high 26 points, but it was his last-minute 3-pointer that proved to be the game winner during Palmetto's 62-59 win over Avon Park in a Class 4A-District 10 showdown on Thursday.

"Missed free throws were again our Achille's heel," said AP coach Luther Clemons. "We either make them or miss them. Tonight, they cost us the game."

Baity was deadly from long range, hitting seven 3-pointers. Tekovin Miller led the way for Avon Park with 21 points and Avierre Conner had 17, while center Cleveland Nobles finished with 14 points for the Red Devils.

Avon Park is back on the court today when they face Winter Haven in the T-Mac Holiday Invitational in Auburndale. Game time is 2 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER: Hardee 2, Sebring 0

WAUCHULA - The Hardee girls soccer team scored twice in the first half and took advantage of four missing Blue Streak starters in a 2-0 Class 4A-District 10 victory.

Sebring was without leading scorer Amanda Grimaldo, who was injured during Sebring's Tuesday match with Avon Park. Also missing were senior Lisa Pryzchocki, senior Maxime Copley and sophomore Stephanie Rodriguez.

"We were a little disorganized," said Sebring coach Steve Ashley. "We held our own in the second half. But they're a good little team - they hustled a little more than we did."

Sebring, which falls to 6-4-1 in district, is off until Jan. 8, when they travel to LaBelle.

BOYS SOCCER: Sebring 4, Hardee 2

WAUCHULA - Buck Schroeder continued his scoring barrage, as the junior netted two goals in Sebring's 4-2 victory over Hardee in a Class 4A-District 10 match at Wildcat Stadium on Thursday.

Schroeder, who leads the team with 12 goals, has scored six goals over the last three games for the Streaks.

"Buck has been playing really well and has been extremely aggressive going to the net," said SHS head coach Tim Boulay. "I thought we moved the ball well and we're able to create some solid scoring chances against a really solid team."

Austin Brady and Elisha Klatt each scored a goal in the win.

Sebring is set to participate in the Okeechobee Tournament, which begins Monday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Booker 56, Sebring 30

SARASOTA - Tangie McCullors had six points and Hannah Shoop and Shannon Williams combined for 10 points and 25 rebounds on Thursday night, but playing five games in seven days caught up the Sebring in a 56-30 district loss to Booker.

The Tornadoes built a 21-9 halftime lead and extended their lead down the stretch.

"We just have to keep working on taking care of the basketball," said Sebring coach Mike Lee. "We're having trouble putting the ball in the basket. We're getting good looks and we're rebounding well, we just need to finish."

The Streaks have the Christmas holiday off before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 27, when they play in the Belleview Christmas tourney.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Palmetto 46, Avon Park 37

PALMETTO - Ashley Smith scored 20 points to lead Palmetto to a 46-37 win over Avon Park in a Class 4A-District 10 showdown on Thursday.

Avon Park travels today to face Winter Haven in the T-Mac Holiday Invitational in Auburndale. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.

WEIGHTLIFTING: LP Girls Canceled

CHARLOTTE - Due to transportation issues, the Lake Placid girls weightlifting team didn't compete in Thursday's Charlotte Invitational.

The Green Dragons are back in action on Friday, Jan. 9, when they travel to LaBelle.
