Highlands County Accident Claims Life Of Ohio Man

AVON PARK - An Ohio man died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday night at State Road 17 and Lake Letta Drive.

Clement E. Lewis, 83, of Toledo, Ohio, died at 8:05 p.m., at Florida Hospital in Sebring. He was transported there following the accident, which occurred at 6:40 p.m.

Lewis was southbound on State Road 17 on a 1993 Honda Goldwing, while a 2006 Honda Ridgeline, driven by Charles M. Detore, 61, of Avon Park, was northbound, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Detore was trying to turn left into a driveway in the 2000 block of State Road 17 South, when he reportedly traveled into the path of Lewis' vehicle. The Goldwing struck the front right side of the Ridgeline. Lewis was ejected off the vehicle.

Damages from the crash are estimated at $25,000. Charges are pending an investigation, including whether the crash was alcohol related in relation to the victim, according to the FHP.
