Wages At G.M.

Published: December 10, 2008

In response to Mr. McAllister's letter of Dec. 9, concerning his father's and brother's wages at G.M. Was there a fairy godmother that paid the several hundred dollars a month for their lucrative Blue Cross benefits? Was there a fairy godmother that paid into a very nice retirement package for each hourly employee?

How much do you think it cost G.M. for all the other benefits that they received, such as up to six weeks vacation pay per year, multiple paid holidays, unemployment taxes, 95 percent sub-pay wages during layoffs?

I wouldn't be surprised if $75 was a low estimate. Actually, the people who paid these expenses were the G.M. customer.

Factor in other expenses that are incurred during the manufacturing process such as employee thefts, leaving work early while still on the clock, sleeping on the job, etc. I would again bet that $75 per hour is a low figure.
