AVON PARK - Gail Brown used solid chipping and good putting to shoot an 80 to grab the first round lead of the Heartland Women's Amateur at Highlands Ridge North on Saturday.
Brown, who plays a lot at Sun 'N Lake Country Club, is two shots ahead of defending champion Sheila Chiarandini, who carded an 82.
The competitors played from the gold tees and Nela Hodge is in third place with an 85, while Bonnie Lennox, who lost to Chiarandini in last year's playoff, is at 86 as is Nan Reno and Toni Fletcher.
Ella Hillier shot an 87 and Nancy Jankovic came in with an 88.
Results from Sunday's final 18 holes were not available at press time.
