SARASOTA - Joe Young scored a game-high 14 points and Sebring used a suffocating full-court press to force 23 turnovers en route to a 67-31 win over Sarasota Booker in boys basketball on Saturday night.
The Class 4A-District 10 win improved the Blue Streaks to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in district play.
"We jumped on Booker early with our press and never let them get back in the game," said Sebring coach Princeton Harris. "We used our quickness and athleticism and played with a lot of intensity."
Senior guard Chris Grubb added 11 points and six assists to spark the Blue Streaks to the district win.
"Chris played a solid floor game and handled the ball well," said Harris. "We've got a lot of room for improvement, but the kids are working hard and we're headed in the right direction."
Sebring is back in action on Tuesday with an away game at Lake Placid.
Sebring Wrestlers Finish Second
LAND O LAKES - Sebring made quite an impression at Saturday's Land O Lakes High School wrestling meet.
The 10-team meet attracted some outstanding grapplers and the Blue Streaks managed to finish second in their first meet of the season.
"We had a great meet and it was an outstanding way to start the season," said first-year Sebring coach Josh Miller. "We had several guys who stepped up and competed at a high level against tough competition."
Leading the way was Blue Streak senior Dustin Drummond, who won the 130-pound weight class and was selected the "Outstanding Wrestler" of the meet.
"Dustin won all five of his matches and looked good doing it," said Miller. "He wrestled smart and it looks like he's going to be a force this season."
Freshman Mike Hutchinson won the 140-pound weight class, including four pins along the way to the title.
"Mike was outstanding," Miller said. "His last match was one of the best matches of the day and one that everyone wanted to see."
Junior Shane Liskey placed second in the 215-pound division and freshman Jeremy Qualls finished runner-up in the 125-pound weight class with four pins and junior Michael Polatty placed second in the 145-pound division.
"I'm really proud of the guys for the way they wrestled today," said Miller. "They really bonded as a team and they worked hard for each other.
"Winning a trophy for second place as a team is an awesome way to start the season and a sign of good things to come."
Sebring is back on the mats with a match at Mulberry on Tuesday and then the Blue Streaks host Lake Region in a dual meet at 7 on Friday night.
"This is a huge meet and we're trying to pack the gymnasium," said Miller. "We want a lot of people to attend to let the kids experience a home meet with a lot energy and enthusiasm.
"We want to build up the fan base for wrestling and this is one of the ways we're going to start doing that."
