I read with some concern the guest column by Steve Chapman titled "Ban on Gay Adoption Only Hurts Kids," published in Highlands Today on Dec. 2.
The title pretty well summarizes the essay. The fact that it presents one side, setting forth the supposed harm done to children by the ban, prompted me to try to present something of the other side of the issue.
It is fair to say that our assessment of the possible harm done to the child depends largely upon our judgment of the desirability of the spreading the "alternate lifestyle" of homosexuality, as opposed to the desirability of having the child raised under the care, love and influence of what we have accepted as normal parents; a male father and a female mother, who have together conceived the child.
Broken families are the bane of modern society and may well destroy us!
God knew that every child needs a mother to be the epitome of womanhood and a father to be the epitome of manhood to furnish examples for the child and to instruct, guide and train the child to become the well rounded character worthy to be the parent of the next generation. God in his wisdom provided men and women to be the fathers and mothers for that very purpose.
It astonishes me that judges and psychologists dare to think that they know better. Mr. Chapman refers to the circuit judge who struck down the Florida law. This kind of action by the courts has been more and more common. I can only say that government "of the people, by the people and for the people" has practically vanished from America, when judges can summarily dispose of what the people have seen fit to enact.
