WAUCHULA - Avon Park doesn't give out game balls, but if they did, head coach Luther Clemons would have to give Tim Dennis the honor after his performance on Friday against Hardee in a Class 4A-District 10 match-up.

Dennis scored five key points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while giving Clemons the 100-percent effort off the bench he was looking for, as the Red Devils tamed the 'Cats down the stretch with a 43-41 victory.

"Tim gave me exactly what I was looking for from him tonight," Clemons said. "He came out with the right intensity and was really disruptive to Hardee's offense. You can't always look at the stat sheet to see what kind of impact a player has on a game."

Avon Park went up by as much as 10 points in the game, but a late rally by Hardee made it a close game in the final minutes before the Red Devils pulled out the win.

The Red Devils snagged a season-best 26 rebounds and 16 steals in the game, but turned the ball over 24 times to the 'Cats that helped fuel the home team's rally.

Derrick McKenzie finished with 10 points and Alonzo Robertson had nine in the win.

Avon Park is back on the court Tuesday when they travel to face district foe Booker. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Avon Park 58, Hardee 35

Daija Barrett scored 19 points Johnequa Perry added 10 more on Friday night to lead the Avon Park girls basketball team to a 58-35 district victory over Hardee.

"We played our game plan, but we still missed a few layups and free throws," said AP coach Paulette Daley, whose team improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in district play. "I did a little mixing and matching and brought the bench in."
