Bill Bernardi's letter is right on. Football has been fixed since Broadway Joe threw the 50-yard pass that won the Super Bowl game for the Jets many years ago. Everyone is in on it from the players, coaches and referees. A ref controls the placement of the ball for a first down; calls pass interference and roughing the passer. A player can step off-sides and cause his team five yards any time he wants.
The fans need to watch the game more closely to detect these small cheats by all. Not all the players are cheating but certain ones can be bought by big time gamblers and paid $5,000 to $10,000 for a so called offside jump.
Now the proof is in the fact that the point spread on betting pools is almost perfect. Now ask yourself how could this be? It's easy if you can buy only one player or one ref, you control the points.
Don't try to tell a football fan the game is fixed. It is like trying to tell a wrestling fan it is phony. They're just as dumb!
