SEBRING - Taking advantage of picture-perfect weather and ideal scoring conditions, 102 golfers participated in Saturday's Avon Park American Legion Post 69 golf tournament at Sun 'N Lake Country Club.
The sixth annual event is a major fundraiser for American Legion Post 69 and the proceeds go to benefit the Avon Park Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp.
"We're happy to be able to assist the ROTC programs," said American Legion Post 69 financial officer Bob Burke. "This is an annual event that we look forward to and one that helps us contribute to a worthwhile program for young people.
"It allows us to help with equipment, uniforms or whatever we can."
The one-day, 18-hole tournament was a four-person, best-ball format and the golfers competed on the demanding 6,400-yard, par 72 Deer Run course.
Finishing first was the talented foursome of Tim and Lori Conely, Dutch Anderson and Ron Johnson with a sore of 6-under-par 66.
Coming in second with a score of 68 was the quartet of Buck Anderson, John Beatrice, Dave Miller and Bob Rock.
"It was a beautiful day to play golf," said Burke. "The course was in great shape and we want to thank the staff and management at Sun 'N Lake for their assistance."
Coming in a close third was the team of Bill Glenn, Paul Morris, Gary Rathburn and Rick Straight with a 69.
Most courageous players award went to the foursome of Bob and Jean Hensel, Carol Huffman and Charlie Barksdale with an undisclosed score.
Tim Conely won long drive for the men, while Lori Conely won the long drive competition for the women.
"We really appreciate the support from the people in the community," Burke said. "We didn't have as many golfers as in the past, but I'm sure the economy had something to do with that.
"We're going to have another tournament in the spring and hopefully, we'll have a big turnout."
