ARCADIA - Sophomore Greg Gentry set the school record for nine holes with a 3-under-par 33 to lead the Avon Park boys golf team to a season-opening victory over DeSoto on Thursday afternoon at The Bluffs golf course.
Red Devil senior Austin Smith carded a 2-over 38, while juniors Clay Davis, Evan Danzey and John Tracey also came in with a 38 for a four-person team score of 147, also a school record.

The 147 total easily beat DeSoto's four-man total of 208.

"I'm really pleased with how the guys played," said veteran Red Devil coach Bobby Barben. "At one point in the match we were under par as a team, and that's pretty neat.

"The boys played well, stayed focused and that's a great way to start the season."

Gentry, who had a solid summer on the Sertoma Junior Golf Tour, continued his stellar play by recording three birdies over the demanding Bluffs course.

"Greg has been playing well and did a good job of keeping the ball in play today," said Barben. "The rest of the team was solid and to set a school record is special."

Avon Park's next match is against Sebring on Tuesday at Sun 'N Lake Country Club.

Sebring Girls Win Tri-match

LAKELAND - Sebring junior Camiel White shot a 45, senior Priscilla Adams had a 46, freshman Savana Fisher came in with a 55 and freshman Lindsey Lovett shot a 59 to lead the Blue Streaks girl's golf team to a sweep of their tri-match on Thursday.

Sebring had a four-person score of 205, while McKeel Academy placed second with a 247 and Lakeland High finished third at 256.

The season-opening wins came despite some early jitters.

"We had some first-match jitters," said first-year coach Jeff Hendges. "But the girls persevered and were able to come away with a win.

"It's good to start the season off with a win, but we have room for improvement."
Class 2A Sebring is back in action with an away match against Lakeland George Jenkins on Tuesday.
