SEBRING - Who will the Republicans choose as their champion, to meet Democratic incumbent Tim Mahoney in the 16th district congressional race?
The choice still wasn't known by10 p.m., but State Rep. Gayle Harrell had taken a slight lead, based on early voting and absentee results across the district. In Highlands County, Rooney won 2,097 to 2,021 for Harrell and 1,504 for Valeche.
What is also unknown is whether negative TV advertising hurt Hal Valeche. He attacked Rooney on the basis of Rooney's family dog tracks, but Valeche was lagging behind both Rooney and Harrell in the district-wide race.
Assistant Elections Supervisor Norma Stokes expected the electronic results to be reported from the polls by 7:30 p.m., but by 9:30, she was still waiting as the boxes were brought into the election office.
In the race for circuit judge, Nathaniel White was trailing John Radabaugh by 22,045 to 26,650, with just a few precincts reporting in Hardee, Highlands, and Polk counties.
