UPDATED: Tuesday's Voter Turnout Could Be One Of the Lowest

Highlands County's Assistant Supervisor of Elections Norma Stokes said that by 4 p.m., only 4,887 people had voted in today's primary, which is 7.6 percent of the county's elected voters.

She described the turnout as terrible. If the trend continues until 7 p.m. when polls close, today's voter turnout could be one of the lowest.

Earlier in the day, Joyce Sirois didn't know why the turnout was low.

"There were no major issues on the ballot," explained Ed Wilson.

At the Sebring Masonic Lodge, Mike Cummins agreed. "There aren't any tax issues."

Democrats can choose between incumbent Susan Benton or Avon Park Commander Mike Rowan in the sheriff's race, and either Jeri Canale or Bruce Borkosky in the District 3 county commission race.

The Republicans have two races too: incumbent Andrew Jackson or challenger Jeff Carlson in the county commission race, and Gayle Harrell, Tom Rooney or Hal Valeche in the congressional race. All three congressional candidates are from the Palm Beach area.
