SEBRING - A Sebring man was pronounced dead at 9:32 a.m. Monday after a single-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on State Road 60, west of Lake Wales.
James A. Wedemeier, 27, was driving in a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina when he crashed at 3:20 p.m. Friday, west of North Airport Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the report, Wedemeier was headed east on the inside lane of SR 60 when for an unknown reason his car swerved left, then back right and into a cement curb. The vehicle hit a metal sign, a chain link fence and a wooden utility pole before coming to a stop.
Although Wedemeier reportedly was wearing his seat belt, the car hit the pole in between the driver's side door and the rear door causing "significant intrusion" into the passenger compartment, the FHP reported.
Wedemeier was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where he died, the patrol reported.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the patrol reported.
