Labor Day is traditionally celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of summer. But do you know how it got its name?

The holiday originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union (of New York City) to create a "day off for the working man." A workingman's holiday! It is a creation of the labor movement and is for the social and economic achievements of the American workers. Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894 and all 50 states have made this a day a state holiday.

The idea for the celebration of this day was to have street parades to exhibit to the public "the strength and pride of the trade and labor organizations." There were many parades, speeches (political and otherwise) and also regarded as a day of rest. Many forms of celebrations were held including picnics, fireworks, displays, water sports and public art events to name a few. Most of these activities have been lost in time.

There are still a few traditions around our country still held such as the annual telethon of Muscular Dystrophy, Chicago's Taste of Polonia, a very large Polish-themed festival, Boomsday, a large fireworks display in Knoxville, Tenn., and in Michigan the annual Mackinaw Bridge Walk whereby the people can walk the length of the bridge. These are just a few of the fun events that happen on this day.

One thing I remember as a young girl is the fashion etiquette that white shoes were taboo after this day (Labor Day) and that this custom is fading. We can wear white anytime of the year, but I would think some of us "old-timers" might still carry on the tradition. Are you with me?

In ending may I say that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creators of so much of our nation's strength, freedom and leadership; the American worker. God bless them and thank them for all they do.
