ZOLFO SPRINGS - Traffic homicide investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol spent about three hours going over the scene of a fatal crash Thursday morning that involved a Sebring man and a Bonita Springs man who was killed.
It was about 9:45 a.m. when a 2006 Ford box truck driven by Robert Mark Mayo, 18, of Sebring ran into the back of a 1993 Ford truck driven by Brian Steven Gruntman, 34, of Wauchula, as Gruntman tried to turn right into a residence on U.S. 17, about five miles north of the DeSoto County line, according to the FHP report.
Mayo failed to slow down and as a result the front of his box truck hit the rear of Gruntman's truck, causing Mayo's truck to enter the northbound lane of U.S. 17.
Marian Horgan, 52, and Timothy J. Horgan, both of Bonita Springs, were each riding Harley motorcycles headed northbound on U.S. 17, when Mayo's truck hit them both.
Timothy J. Horgan was pronounced dead at the scene by fire rescue personnel, the report stated.
Marian Horgan and Mayo were each taken to DeSoto Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the report stated. Gruntman was not injured.
All lanes of U.S. 17 were shut down for three hours while the traffic homicide scene was cleaned up and for investigative purposes, the report stated.
Damage to the box truck was estimated at $17,000. Damage to Gruntman's Ford truck was listed at $12,000 and the two Harley motorcycles each sustained $10,000 damage, the report stated.
No charges were filed as of press time, according to the report.
