AVON PARK - Avon Park Fire Department Chief Terry Feickert announced Monday evening that he will end his 10-year tenure Aug. 24 as the city's top firefighter.
"It's been a hoot," the outgoing chief told the city council and City Manager Sarah Adelt as they gave him a standing ovation.
Adelt said after the council meeting that she received the retirement letter from Feickert Monday morning. She said someone in the fire department will act as the fire chief once Feickert leaves his office, but she did not immediately name the successor.
His retirement had been anticipated for nearly a year. Councilman George Hall even used Feickert's anticipated retirement in his reasoning to merge the fire and police chief into a public safety coordinator position. The council eventually dropped the idea.
