SEBRING - A diesel semi caught fire and closed a northbound lane of U.S. 27 Monday morning.
The driver, Larry Crews, was not injured in the incident as he stopped his truck in the turning lane near the Sparta Road intersection at 8:29 a.m.
Crews was delivering construction materials from Labelle for a mobile home in the Sebring area, he said, when he suddenly heard a loud "boom" from his engine. After the boom, a plume of white smoke started coming out of his engine.
Firefighters from the Sebring Fire Department pulled out a burning air filter and worked on a black fluid leaking from the engine area. The fluid was not immediately identified. The engine explosion was cleaned up by 9:04 a.m.
