Young Boys Charged With Burglary

AVON PARK - Two Avon Park boys were in the care of the Department of Juvenile Justice on Thursday after they were arrested and charged with burglary of a home in the 100 block of Southland Court, where Avon Park police say they stole some video games.

Some time between 5 and 6 p.m. Tuesday, the victim reported that someone entered her home and stole a duffle bag with her son's Playstation 2 video game system, two games and a Gameboy containing a Dragon Ball Z video, police reported.

The victims immediately named the two boys, ages 9 and 10, as suspects because they were seen in the neighborhood before they went out.

The son reportedly retrieved the Gameboy from one of the two suspects and police learned one of the boys lived in the 1800 block at Golden Age Villas.

By 6:12 p.m. Tuesday police questioned the 10-year-old. He reportedly admitted he kept lookout while the 9-year-old went inside the home. He said when the other boy took too long, he went inside. He told police the other boy lived in the 100 block of East Camphor Street.

When police spoke with the 9-year-old, he told them the 10-year-old went in, while he acted as lookout. The 9-year-old told police he put the duffel bag in his mother's bedroom, where he retrieved it and turned it over to police.

After some discussion, the 10-year-old admitted he went in first.

Both boys were taken to Highlands County Jail, where they were each charged with burglary of a dwelling and grand theft.

They were then turned over to their legal guardians and were issued notices to appear before the Department of Juvenile Justice at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 30.

Due to privacy rules DJJ cannot disclose information regarding their juvenile subjects.
