AVON PARK — An Avon Park man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail Wednesday, charged with attempted murder of a woman over her small claims court case against him involving a damaged cell phone.
Travis Lenard Fogle, 20, of 721 S. Delaney Ave., was booked into the jail Tuesday on charges of attempted murder with a firearm, two counts of child abuse and firing a deadly missile by shooting into a building.
It was about 10 p.m. Aug. 22 when shots rang out at Ridgedale Apartments, at 720 Fairview Terrace, in Avon Park.
Police say the incident began over a court case the intended victim had filed while attempting to get her money back after she said Fogle had damaged her cellular telephone.
The victim told police that she was at the Circle K gas station, at 999 U.S. 27 S., when she told Fogle she planned to sue him in court.
Fogle reportedly began to curse at her, calling her names. She then drove to Ridgedale Apartments to "hang out with some friends."
Minutes later, Fogle pulled up, driving at a high rate of speed. He entered a girlfriend's apartment at Ridgedale and left 15 seconds later with a handgun. He reportedly wouldn't tell the girlfriend why he was so angry, telling her to leave him alone.
He cursed and began firing at the intended victim, the report stated. At least a half-dozen people with their children ducked inside of the apartments.
Fogle had been telling people for about two weeks prior to the incident that the intended victim would never get any of her money, the report stated.
Witness accounts stated two to four shots were fired, the report stated.
Shots struck the building about 10 feet from where the intended victim was sitting. One witness told police she was in fear of her life and the life of her two small children, who were nearby.
"We developed information he was in Miami and have been working closely with the Miami Police Department," said Avon Park Police Sgt. Jason Lister. "On Sunday night he was taken into custody at 10 p.m."
