SEBRING — Nearly a dozen district office administrators have new job titles, but two school board members voted against the revised job descriptions.
Superintendent Wally Cox proposed the changes in job descriptions and titles to be consistent with those used across the state.
By a 3-2 vote the school board approved the revised job descriptions.
School Board Chairwoman Donna Howerton and Board Member Andy Tuck voted against the change.
"We need to look at this a little more closely before we start changing these job titles," Howerton said Wednesday. Job applicants are more concerned about the responsibilities of a position and its salary than the job title.
The job descriptions needed a lot of tweaking and correcting and may need more adjustments, she said.
The school board will hold a workshop next month to discuss and set long-term strategies and goals, Howerton said. With the numerous recent administrative changes, it doesn't make sense to change job titles before new district goals are set, which may lead to job description changes.
"Looking at the schools and the FCAT scores, do we need to put an emphasis in other areas?" she asked. "Do we need to put an emphasis in the classroom?"
School Board Member Andy Tuck also said the job description changes should wait until after the school board looks at major issues next month.
The job description changes include two former director positions, which are now assistant superintendent of curriculum/instruction and assistant superintendent of business/operations.
A number of departments that were headed by a "coordinator" now have a "director" in the top spot including elementary programs, secondary programs, management information systems, facilities/maintenance, transportation, finance, human resources, student support services and food and nutrition services.
No actual personnel changes occurred.
In a separate vote, the school board unanimously approved the administrative salary schedule, which except for a reduction in pay for one position, remained un-changed from the 2006-07 pay rates.
