In response to Liz Blood's letter titled "Why Cyclists?" I can't help but agree that safe trails are needed throughout the entire Highlands County area, so that our citizens can safely enjoy healthful daily living. The Ridge Trails Association, a volunteer 501c3 organization, is dedicated to advocating for the 450 miles of existing and proposed trails in our county.
With 180 miles of separate multi-use trails (hiking and bicycling), 105 miles of shared bikeways, 30 miles of canoe trails and 43 miles of equestrian trails, there is a lot to do. Check out www.ridgetrails.org and see what is happening. You can join easily. Plan to attend our "big Canoe Challenge" at Lake June Park in October. Our community needs safe trails and you can help.
If every biker, hiker, canoeist and equestrian united in this quest, the chances of accidents on the roadways would be greatly diminished. We too hope for a speedy recovery for Darrell Smith.
