A strong showing.
That's what the Sebring and Avon Park high school swimming teams made in the Florida Southern Swim Classic on Saturday in Lakeland.
The 11-team meet, hosted by Florida Southern College, attracted a number of talented programs and both the Blue Streaks and Red Devils were content with their finishes.
The Sebring girls took second with 138.5 points while the Avon Park girls came in tied with Lake Region for sixth.
The Sebring boys took first with 165 points and the Avon Park boys finished third.
Blue Streak boys coach Cheryl Parsons was excited about her squad's first-place performance.
"The boys have worked hard so far this year," she said. "I'm glad it is paying off for them."
The meet started well for Sebring as Megan Wolfe, Paige Giller, Leeza Freeland, and Katie Bullard finished the 200-yard medley relay in second with a time of 2:08.17.
Katelyn Bryan, Katie Havery, Michelle Bash, and Kristi Livingston took fourth for Sebring with a 2:15.32.
The Blue Streak boys had an even better start to the meet with Shaanan Spiegel, Bryan Kirsch, Jason Parsons, and Matthew Vickers taking first in the 200 medley relay with a 1:57.91. Colton Statler, Thomas Quigg, Josh Heflin, and Rodney Havery swam a 2:07.70 for third place for Sebring.
Sebring's Vickers helped the team after the relay by taking second in the 200 freestyle event with a time of 2:13.14.
Bullard swam the 50 free for Sebring in 28.69 and came in third.
Miguel Ortiz of Avon Park took first in the 50 freestyle for the boys with a 24.91.
Quigg swam a 26.14 for third for Sebring and Will Odham came in fourth for Avon Park with a 26.85.
Freeland swam the 100 butterfly in 1:08.25 to take third for Sebring.
Parsons (SHS) was fourth in the boys 100 butterfly with a 1:08.81.
Wolfe (SHS) swam the 100 free with a 55.77 for first.
Sebring's Brian Miller swam a 2:49.24 for fourth in the 200 individual medley event.
In the 200 free relay, Freeland, Bullard, Havery, and Wolfe took first with a 1:49.24.
Avon Park's Erica Otto, Heather Barnes, Brittany Murphy, and Megan Richardson took third in the 200 free with a 2:01.09.
Kirsch, Parsons, Quigg, and Spiegel were first for the boys with a 1:42.29.
Will Odham, Drew Sedlock, Nolan Jahn, and Miguel Oritz took second for Avon Park with a 1:50.86.
Sebring's Statler, Vickers, Havery, and Heflin were third with a 1:52.77.
Brittany Ricker (SHS) swam a 1:15.54 in the 100 backstroke for fourth.
Spiegel took first for Sebring in the boys 100 backstroke with a 1:02.28.
In the 100 breaststroke, Giller was fourth with a 1:18.33. Kirsch was first in the boys with a 1:08.70.
"It was nice to be at this large of a meet and compete against these teams," said Avon Park's assistant coach Quinlan Wolfe.
"We saw all of our times improve."
Sebring hosts a meet on Thursday with this being designated Seniors Night for the Blue Streaks as the swimming season continues to fly by.
