What the Sebring Blue Streak girls golf team lacked in course knowledge they made up for in overall talent on Saturday.
The Blue Streaks played a very consistent round despite the odds to finish fourth in a 23 team field at the Sparta High Invitational in Wisconsin.
"We all had a great time up in Wisconsin," Sebring head coach Tom McClurg said. "I thought the girls played really well considering they were on unfamiliar territory.
"Local knowledge of the courses played a factor in the outcome. The girls had to adjust to the different type of grass and the speed of the greens. I think it was a great experience for this team. I want to challenge the girls and test their game and I think it will payoff come tournament time."
Sebring finished with a team total of 365 points with the Onalaska Hilltoppers carding a 336, Waukesha shot a 353 and Holmen's 360 rounded out the top four positions of a tournament that featured eight of the top teams in Wisconsin.
Senior Heather Brownell shot an 85 over 18 holes on the par-72 Sparta Municipal Golf Course under adverse physical conditions.
"She [Brownell] battled the flu bug the entire trip," McClurg said. "She came up with some big shots and finished strong. I'm real proud of the whole team."
Kayla Dunn had a rough start to the flighted tournament, but played well down the stretch to finish with a 91 on the day, while Julianne Lind shot a 95.
Sophomore Camiel White finished with a 101, while Priscilla Adams carded a 94, who took top honors in her flight. Melissa Luke and Kayla Griffin finished with a 100 and 112, respectively.
The team showed poise and determination, in competing against top flight linksters that will only go toward preparing them for the late season tournament action.
The trip was made possible with the support the community. Many of the area golfers participated in the Red, White and Blue golf tournament in July raised over $3,500, with many of the participants donating their winnings to the golf team. The Blue Streaks also played in a golf marathon, where they were sponsored on a per hole basis by people for the community.
The Blue Streaks are back home and returned to the links on Tuesday against George Jenkins. Results were not available at press time.
