LP Man Charged With Armed Robbery

SEBRING — A Lake Placid man remained in the Highlands County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail Wednesday, charged in connection with an armed robbery at the Ridgewood Drive Shell gas station on the Sebring Parkway.

Jacob David Knowles, 34, of 183 St. Lucie St., was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit a felony and robbery with a firearm.

The victim, a 57-year-old man, called Sebring police to report he had been robbed at gunpoint at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, outside of the Shell gas station, located at 629 Ridgewood Drive.

He told police that a silver Dodge vehicle drove up to him. A man he described as muscular, 6-feet 2-inches tall, weighing about 220 pounds, wearing a black shirt a white undershirt with gold front teeth and medium dreadlocks, got out of the driver's side an pulled out a small black handgun from his waist.
"I want your money," he reportedly told the victim.

The man reportedly reached into the victim's back pocket and took about $280 cash from his wallet, threw the wallet back at him and as he left told the victim, "If you call the police, I will kill you."
The victim got the tag number of the vehicle as it drove away.

Police ran the tag through the Smart Cop system, the report stated. It came back to a 2005 silver four-door Dodge. There had been several traffic stops involving this vehicle. The driver each time was Knowles, the report stated.

The victim looked at a photo lineup and identified Knowles as his assailant, the report stated.
On Monday an off-duty Highlands County sheriff's deputy spotted Knowles as a passenger in another vehicle, said Sebring Police Cmdr. Steve Carr. He notified central dispatch. A traffic stop was conducted by Sebring police on U.S. 27 south of Highlands Avenue and Knowles was arrested.

A holster was found lying on the ground next to the vehicle, Carr said. However, no handgun was recovered.
