LAKE PLACID — For the past four weeks, members of the Lake Placid football team have woken up on Saturday mornings in a bad mood.
With four straight losses under their belts and their playoff hopes all but dashed, coach Tim Grant and his Green Dragons are looking to play a new role as they head into tonight's 7:30 p.m. meeting with Class 2A-District 5 leading Fort Myers Bishop Verot.
"When the sun comes up on Saturday, we'd like for someone else's day to be miserable," Grant said. "We're hoping we can play spoiler, and knock someone else out."
To do that, Lake Placid (2-5) will need to negate the Vikings' potent spread offense and play like they did in the second half of last week's 28-0 loss to Lennard. The Dragons allowed just one score in the second half against the Longhorns, a positive trend Grant hopes his club can continue throughout LP's final home game of the season.
"We made some adjustments, but they key was that we didn't get beat up," Grant said. "We got out and came after it."
Offensively, the Dragons have had trouble moving the football, something Grant said the team has been working hard to change this week. He noted his team needs to hammer down the fundamentals of getting off the ball and following through on snaps and hand-offs before they worry about making big plays.
"We're young, so every week we're getting better as a staff and as a team," Grant said. "We won't be changing much — we can't let guys get caught up in formations. There's no need to try to confuse anyone, we'll be running plays that we've repped a bunch."
Senior quarterback Conlin Veley, who missed much of the second half at Lennard with a sore shoulder, will be a gametime decision tonight after taking it easy at practice all week. No matter who's under center, however, Grant said, the Dragons need to play within themselves if they hope to pull off the upset and muddle Verot's postseason picture.
"We're not panicking," he said. "We've looked at film, and our mistakes are coming from a missed block here or a missed assignment there. If we take care of those little things, the big things will take care of themselves."
