SEBRING — The Sebring High School girls golf team played well in Tuesday's Class 2A-Region 3 tournament at Sebring Golf Club.
But their score of 351 wasn't good enough to qualify for next week's state tournament.
Lake Howell, two-time defending state champion, won the nine-team competition with a four-person score of 321, while Olympia placed second and earned a berth at state with a 337.
Only the top two teams and top two individuals move on to state, and Winter Park finished third at 344 and Sebring came in fourth with a 351.
The Blue Streaks were led by Heather Brownell's 83, Kayla Dunn shot an 84, Julianne Lind carded a 90 and Priscilla Adams shot a 94.
"I'm proud of the girls because they played hard and did the best they could," Sebring coach Tom McClurg said. "Our score was pretty good and probably would have qualified if we were in a different regional.
"This has to be the toughest regional in the state with Lake Howell and some of the other Orlando schools competing, but our girls played their hearts out and it just wasn't our day."
Lake Brantley claimed fifth at 369, Celebration shot 379, Lakeland George Jenkins came in at 381, Timber Creek shot a 391 and Osceola finished with a 415.
Lake Howell's Carlie Yadloczky shot a 75 and won medalist honors, after beating Edgewater's Mia Campbell on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with a birdie.
Both girls advance to the state tournament, which will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday at Eaglebrooke Country Club in Lakeland.
Avon Park's Shelby Dressel, who competed in the Class 1A-Region 3 tournament at Imperial Lakes Country Club in Naples, did not finish in the top two spots.
Class 1A-Region 3
Avon Park High School golfers Austin Smith and Greg Gentry competed in the boys Class 1A-Region 3 tournament at Pelican Preserve Country Club in Fort Myers on Monday.
Smith, a junior, shot a 73, while Gentry, a sophomore, carded an 80.
"I'm very proud of Austin because he had really good course management today," Red Devil coach Bobby Barben said. "Greg had it going for about 12 holes and then struggled coming in. "I'm proud of both of them and look forward to next year."
