AVON PARK — The Florida Division of Forestry will start a controlled burn of approximately 30 acres of land in the Avon Park Lakes area today, by 1 p.m.
Melissa Yunas, a spokeswoman with the Division of Forestry, said this is the first of several fires the agency will prescribe this season. She also advised residents in the area to be aware of the smoke in the area when the fire starts.
Yunas added that these fires are a preventive measure to protect the homes in the area from wild fires. Two brush fires occurred recently in the area.
