AVON PARK — A plastic box filled with intestines and other organs got the rumor mill cranking Monday, but it turned out the remains were not human.
The innards were found on the side of the road in a clear plastic box by a teenager walking along on Earnest E. Sims Street, in Avon Park, near the Hopewell Academy, "like they were thrown from a car," said Avon Park Police Sgt. Jason Lister on Tuesday.
There was no carcass, he said.
"We've heard all kinds of rumors," Lister said. "Fox 13 called and said we heard you found the remains of a 6-year-old. Channel 8, 10 and 13 all called looking for a breaking story."
The remains were taken to Winter Haven to the District 10 Medical Examiners Office where it was determined they were not human.
