SEBRING — A man sought since a gas drive-off on Jan. 22 from the J.V. Convenience Store on U.S. 27 and Josephine Drive and a subsequent high-speed car chase, was arrested on warrants Wednesday at the jail's reception area.
Detention Lt. Paula Weeks said Thursday that Rolland Allen Burrell, 42, of 932 Forest Ave., Sebring, made arrangements with a bondsman and turned himself in on Wednesday. He was freed the same day on $1,500 bail.
Burrell was also released on his own recognizance on a Hillsborough County arrest warrant, according to a jail central records spokeswoman.
Burrell was booked into the Highlands County Jail on warrants on charges of fleeing attempting to elude a law enforcement officer with disregard to safety of persons or property, driving while driver's license suspended or revoked and petty theft.
According to the arrest report, deputies were called on the gas drive-off at about 8:13 a.m. Jan. 22, and a description of a 2000 Chevrolet Impala and tag number was given.
The sister of the registered owner told investigators that her aunt had taken over the payments and possession of the car. Investigators learned that the aunt's husband, Burrell, drove the car, the report stated.
When investigators got to the aunt's home, Burrell was coming out. When he saw the deputy coming, he reportedly ran to the car and took off.
A high speed pursuit from Forrest Avenue, onto Grand Prix Drive and onto U.S. 27 ensued. When the Chevrolet reached speeds of 110 miles per hour on U.S. 27, running a red light at Valerie Boulevard, the chase was called off by a supervisor, because of the danger to the public.
Burrell had been sought by law enforcement ever since.
Man AccusedOf Punching Girlfriend
AVON PARK — An Avon Park man remained in Highlands County Jail without bond after he was arrested when an argument reportedly turned violent.
When sheriff's deputy Robert Livesay arrived on scene responding to a battery complaint at Garrett Road, he found the 21-year-old victim with a large cut below her right eye. It was about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday.
She told the deputy that a "prior boyfriend" Sean Perri, 28, of 206 Garrett Road, Avon Park, had punched her in the face during an argument.
She said she confronted Perri because he did not come home the night before. During the argument he picked her up and removed her from his property, where the argument continued.
Perri is 6-feet 2-inches tall and weighs 210 pounds. The victim is 5-feet 4-inches and weighs 135, the report stated.
When Perri got angry, he punched the victim in the face, the report stated. The victim reported she tried to fight back, but she could not because of Perri's size.
The cut required stitches and was deep enough that bone was showing, the deputy reported. The pair do not live together, have not lived together and have no children together, the report added.
