Taking advantage of the recent rains in the Heartland, the talented duo of Bud Wester and Mike Shawver went on a birdie binge to win the Avon Park High School Project Graduation Golf Tournament.

Saturday's event, which was a two-person scramble format, attracted a field of 56 players, who competed over the tight and demanding 6,500-yard River Greens Golf Course.

Wester and Shawver combined to shoot an 11-under-par 61 to earn the first-place prize of $100, while Floyd Osborne and Alan Price placed second with a 64, after a match of cards with Tim and Charles Devlin.

The First Flight was won by Greg Kramer and Dennis Crews with a 67, after a match of cards with the team's of Rich Becerra and Robert Becerra, who finished second, and Lisa and Rodney Davis.
David Jahna and Jeff Brock won the Second Flight with a 72, after a match of cards with Karen and Bernie Speaker.

Dot and Warren Herendeen finished third with a 73.

The tournament was a fundraiser for the Avon Park High School Project Graduation, which this year will send Red Devil seniors to Wet 'N Wild in Orlando to celebrate their graduations.

Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Rodney Davis on hole No. 3, while Judy Stewart won on hole No. 5, Doug Singletary on No. 12 and Rick Helms was closest on No. 17.

Long drive honors went to Dan Coomes on hole No. 6 and Mike Shawver on hole No. 15.
