A final tune-up.

That's what the inaugural Heartland Invitational was designed to be.

The 18-hole tournament, which was played on Saturday, attracted boys golf teams from Avon Park, DeSoto, Hardee, Lake Placid and Sebring high schools, which competed at the 6,400-yard, par 72 Pinecrest Golf Course.

With the district tournament for all of the local teams next Monday, the Heartland Invitational provided one more opportunity for players to sharpen their games.

Sebring finished first with a four-person score of 320 and the Blue Streaks were led by senior Aaron Snyder, who earned medalist honors with a 76.

Junior Zach Foster shot a 77, sophomore Blake Liles carded a 78 and Brett Drummond and Corey Watt each shot 87.

The win improved the Class 2A Blue Streaks to 26-5 and has them ready for next Monday's district tournament in Lakeland.

"I'm happy with our scores considering how windy and wet it was," said Sebring coach John Snyder. "All the kids have improved their games and we just need to stay focused and be ready for next week, because every shot matters at district."

Avon Park placed second with a 335 and freshman Greg Gentry led the Red Devils with a 78, while Josh Sommerfield shot an 80, sophomore Evan Danzey had an 84 and sophomore Clay Davis finished at 93.

The Class 1A Red Devils, along with DeSoto, Hardee and Lake Placid, play their district tournament next Monday at The Bluffs in Arcadia.

"We played OK for missing two players," said Avon Park coach Bobby Barben. "We still need to work on our course management because the course in Arcadia isn't long, but it is tight and we have to keep the ball in play."

Hardee finished third with a 344 with senior Kaleb Saunders low man at 81.

Jake Crews shot an 82, Brek McClenithan carded a 90 and Kyle Cobb finished at 91.

"We have a lot of talent, we just need to keep the ball in play and not have any really bad holes," said Wildcat coach George Heine.

DeSoto shot a 469 and Lake Placid, which had only three players compete, was led byLogan Smith's 91.
Snyder, Foster, Liles and Gentry earned All-Heartland honors.

Sebring Girls

The Blue Streak girls team improved to 41-11 on the season with a win over Olympia on Saturday at Sebring Golf Club.

Sebring shot a four-person score of 346, while Olympia shot a 369.

The Blue Streaks were led by Heather Brownell's 81, Julianne Lind shot an 86, Priscilla Adams had a season-best 87 and senior Kayla Dunn shot a 92.

"Our scores were good considering the girls got rained on about four times," said Sebring coach Tom McClurg.

The Blue Streaks host the district tournament next Monday at Sebring Golf Club.

"The girls have been working hard on their games and we have the home course advantage," McClurg said. "If we play like we're capable of, we'll do fine in the district tournament."
