LAKE PLACID –– Looking for improvement.

That's what Lake Placid High School volleyball coach Marilyn Jones wants to see from her talented squad with the district tournament only three weeks away.

The Green Dragons have had a solid season thus far, posting an impressive 12-5 record, but Jones knows her team hasn't reached its full potential yet and has scheduled some weekend tournaments to compete in.

"We've played well in most of our matches, but there is room for improvement in every aspect of the game," the veteran Lake Placid coach said. "The competition in these weekend tournaments is excellent, and that's what we need.

"We play against teams that we don't see during the season, and it gives me a chance to play all the girls and that only helps our skill level and depth."

Lake Placid ventured to Lake Wales last Saturday for three matches in the Lake Wales Invitational.

The format was the best 2-out-of 3 games and the Green Dragons, who are the defending Class 3A-District 10 champions, acquitted themselves well.

In the first match, Lake Placid lost to Sarasota Riverview in three games, but the Green Dragons bounced back to knock off Lakeland Christian in three games.

In the final match of the day, Tampa Chamberlain outlasted Lake Placid in three tough games.

"The girls gave a good effort and the competition was just what we needed," Jones said. "We were a little short-handed because it was Homecoming weekend and some of the girls didn't make the trip to Lake Wales.

"Everyone got to play, and some of our younger girls got some valuable experience, and that will pay off come tournament time."

Lake Placid was back in action against LaBelle on Monday night and the Green Dragons were fired up for the match, as the Cowboys beat them earlier in the season.

"We're looking forward to playing LaBelle because they gave us our only regular season loss," Jones said on Monday. "They are a good team, but playing on our home court should be to our advantage."

Lake Placid is back in action tonight with a matchup against District 10 rival Frostproof in the Bulldog's gymnasium.

The Green Dragons edged Frostproof in last year's district final and Jones knows her team will have its hands full.

"Frostproof always plays us tough," the LP coach said. "They have a solid club and always play well at home."
