AVON PARK - AVON PARK - Earnest Perkins has been fired after two seasons as Avon Park football coach and a 1-9 record in 2007.
Perkins met with players on Monday and told them he'd been terminated on Nov. 19. AP athletic director Mort Jackson confirmed the move, calling the decision "administrative."
Perkins coached 22 regular-season games and missed the playoffs in both of his seasons with the Red Devils, amassing an 8-14 record. After leading AP to a 7-5 season in his first year, Perkins' Devils struggled in 2007, managing their lone victory over perennial power Hardee. The win led Perkins to be named "Coach of the Week" by the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the Devils closed out the season with seven straight losses, averaging less than four points per game.
