WINTER HAVEN — A day before Thanksgiving usually means gearing up for the big feast for most, but for the Avon Park wrestling team, it meant getting down on the mat.
The Red Devils sent nine wrestlers to the Winter Haven Invitational meet on Wednesday and seven earned high marks while earning a top three placing against some of the best up-and-coming wrestlers in the area.
While most meets feature the tops from each team, this meet gives an opportunity for some of the younger kids to gain mat experience that can be valuable down the road in their wrestling career.
Omar Torres (160), Guy Bauer (171) and Troy Knight (215) each earned first-place honors, while Greg Gentry (112) placed second for Avon Park.
AP coach Lee Elder is proud of his team's effort and looks forward to seeing them progress.
"The kids wrestled very well," Elder said. "It was nice to go into the Thanksgiving break on a positive note.
"Now we'll take a break and pick back up on Monday and get ready for what lies ahead."
Josh Solis (125), Charles Hubbard (152) and Robert Cabrera (171) all placed third at the invitational.
Avon Park is back on the mat on Dec. 1, when they compete in the Citrus High School Tournament at 10 a.m.
