Local Youngsters Excel In Hoop Shoot

SEBRING –– Maybe Shaquille O'Neal could arrange to come to the Heartland to take some free throw lessons from the youngsters that participated in Saturday's Sebring Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot competition.

The annual event, which continues to grow in popularity, attracted 27 youngsters, ages 8-13, who competed at Sebring Middle School.

The winners of each age group advanced to the regional competition, which will be held in Lake Placid in January.

Finishing first in the girls 8-9 division was Hanna Reppert and placing second was Ezire Pringle.

In the girls 10-11 age group, Micaela Devane came in first, while Rebecca McKenzie placed second and Niesha Brown came in third place.

The girls 12-13 division was won by Briana Williams, while Shawna Muse finished second and Taylor Brown came in third place.

In the boys 8-9 age group, James Peck finished first, while Cleotis Harris came in second and Connor Cool claimed third place.

Jordan Strickland won the boys 10-11 division, while Kenneth McGrath placed second and Gilberto Catalon finished third.

In the boys 12-13 age group, Christopher Cook finished first, while John Baldridge claimed second and Caleb Bateman finished third.

"This was one of our biggest turnouts and we're thrilled about that," said Elks Exhalted Ruler and Hoops Shoot coordinator Dick Stover. "Some year's, we didn't give out all the trophies, but this year we gave them all away."

Sebring Elks Lodge 1529 was the sponsor of the contest and the regional winners will advance to the state competition.
