AVON PARK — Golf is the major recreational sport in the Heartland, and with that in mind, River Greens Golf Course professional Jason Beatty has come up with a novel idea.
A couples golf league.

"There are a lot of leagues in the area for men and a lot of leagues for women, but I thought we would start a league that would give couples a chance to play golf together," Beatty said. "Instead of golf separating people, it would give them a chance to play their favorite sport and spend quality time with each other on and off the course."

The first event is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at River Greens, with the second event slated for Dec. 8 at Placid Lakes Country Club.
Cost is $90 per couple for each event, which includes 18 holes of golf, prizes and a nice dinner after the round.

"We want everyone to have a great experience on the course and off," Beatty said. "The dinners are going to be really nice and we will give prizes away after the golf is over."

The couples series runs through April and consists of one tournament a month, with tee times beginning at 1 p.m.

An important aspect of the series is that only the top three scores for each couple count.
"Everyone has different schedules and if you can't play in some of the events, it really doesn't matter," the affable River Greens pro said. "We'll take the top three scores and award points for each finish."

Different formats will be used for each tournament, which will keep things interesting.
"We'll have best ball and scramble tournaments and some other types of formats," Beatty said. "We want to make it a fun day for everybody, and I think this type of league will fill a void in the area.
"I hope this league grows and becomes popular because a round of golf and a nice dinner is a great way to spend a Saturday."
