LAKE WALES — The Avon Park Red Devils girls soccer squad opened their season against a solid Frostproof team, losing 6-0 at Warner Southern College on Monday.
The game was changed at the last minute from Bulldog Stadium to the Warner Southern College field due to poor playing conditions in Frostproof.
Frostproof's defense dominated the action from the onset, holding the Red Devil forwards at bay, while using great communication and passing in the win.
Avon Park was missing several key players including senior Krystal Serrano, who is out due to injury and junior Shelby Dressel.
The mood of the Red Devils was high after the match, with many players noting much improvement and avoiding the 10-goal mercy rule.
"The girls played well," Patti Brock, mother of senior Alex Brock said. "The last time these teams played, Frostproof scored eight goals before the half. I think the girls feel that this was a moral victory against a very good team."
Avon Park's rematch against Class 4A-District 10 runner-up Braden River Pirates was played on Tuesday. Braden River ousted the Red Devils in last season's district tournament on penalty kicks in one of the best soccer matches in recent year's.
Results of the match were not available at press time.
