The Lake Placid cross country team ended its season on a sour note Friday at the Class 2A-District 6 meet at Golden Gate High School.

No Green Dragon runners qualified for regionals and both the boys and girls team finished near the back of the pack at the grassy course, which was dominated by Naples runners.

Sophomores Vicente Ramos and Logan Morris finished neck-and-neck to lead the way for the LP boys, though both finished outside the top 40. As a team, the Dragon boys finished 16th out of 16 teams.
On the girls side, Erica Resendiz led the way for the Dragons, followed by Thayla Espinoza and Kay Fort. The LP girls finished 12th out of 13 teams.

Naples won both the boys and girls competition, and the top six girls teams, top eight boys teams and top 15 individuals advanced to Region 3 meet on Nov. 9 at Estero Community Park.

"The kids came away with a nice experience, but our times just aren't there yet," said LP boys coach Scott Morgan. "It was a big event, and there were some high-quality runners."

Despite the rough run, Morgan said he's encouraged by the enthusiasm surrounding the team, and is looking forward to bigger things the come next season.

"This year, we probably had our biggest team ever," the third-year coach said. "This is the first year I've had to cut the team down before districts.

"Interest in cross-country is definitely up, and word is getting out that the program is building."
