BELLVIEW — Sebring senior Whitney Lee scored 10 of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter and the Blue Streaks defense came up huge in a 58-49 victory over the Lyman Greyhounds (Orlando) in the second round of the Lady Rattlers Holiday Tournament on Friday.
Lee made some big shots throughout the game, but a pair of free throws in the final seconds kept the Blue Streak lead at seven and the Greyhounds got no closer.
Sebring, which was down four points heading into the final quarter, used great perimeter defense to cool down Lyman's shooters, outscoring the Greyhounds 19-6 in the final eight minutes for the win.
"We didn't really change our defense other than we rotated to their outside shooters," SHS head coach Mike Lee said. "That forced them to kick the ball inside instead of taking the outside shot, which was where they were beating us from."
With the win, Sebring was scheduled to face Gulf High School in the championship game on Saturday.
Results were not available at press time.
Leading by five after the first, Lyman knocked down five 3-pointers in the second to take a 31-29 lead at the half.
Whitney Wells and Hannah Shoop finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively for the Blue Streaks, who improved to 12-4 on the season.
Coach Lee said the experience from this tournament will be invaluable when the district tournament comes around.
"We've played some great competition in this tournament," SHS coach said. "Playing a great perimeter team like Lyman will really help us as we get ready for districts."
