AVON PARK — A Lake Placid man was arrested Tuesday, accused of trying to kill his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend during an argument, while she was holding their baby girl.
Coy Lee Bellamy Jr., 20, of 109 Bonnie Road, was charged by Avon Park police with attempted murder (with a knife) domestic violence related.
Between 2:05 and 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to the Avon Park home of the victim in the 1300 block of Tulane Avenue after she had reportedly been slashed severely by Bellamy Jr., according to Det. Daniel Burke.
The victim told police that Bellamy Jr., the father of her 3-year-old daughter, was at the apartment to visit the child when they argued. She told Bellamy Jr. to leave, the report stated.
He left the apartment and the victim locked the door. Bellamy Jr. reportedly went to the victim's car and retrieved a set of keys. He then let himself back in.
He accused her of having another relationship and reportedly began hitting her with his hands while she lay on the sofa holding their daughter.
He then went to the kitchen and got a "Miracle Blade III" carving knife and returned to the living room, the report stated.
The victim told police that he told her "I'm gonna kill you," Burke reported.
He started swinging the knife at the victim, who still held the baby in her arms. She moved to avoid being cut.
As Bellamy Jr. continued to swing the knife, he cut the victim on her right thigh and right and left calves, then ran away.
The victim's wounds were severe and required her to be airlifted to Tampa General Hospital for emergency medical treatment, the report stated. The child was not injured.
No information was available on the victim, according to a hospital spokesman.
However, Det. Burke said Wednesday that the victim's wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.
Members of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office joined in the search for Bellamy Jr., according to sheriff's Sgt. Mike Delaney, on Wednesday, by going to the home of his parents and grand parents.
Bellamy Jr. was arrested at 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Highlands County Jail where he had gone to give himself up, according to Burke.
