SEBRING — Highlands County Clerk of Courts Luke Brooker announced Friday morning that he would not seek re-election in 2008.
According to Highlands County Courthouse Director of Court Services Bob Germaine, Brooker made the announcement during an employee of the year meeting, saying that he wants to focus on his family after his term expires in January 2009.
"Luke's been here for a long time, and he's been an excellent boss," said Germaine. "I think it came down to wanting to be able to spend more time with his family. He wants to focus on his grandchildren and his health."
Brooker, who has been elected to serve for four terms, could not be reached for comment Friday. Brooker originally took office in January 1993. He ran unopposed in 1996 and had opposition in 2000 and 2004.
"I've been here since 1971, and I've worked for some great clerks," said Germaine. "Luke has been a great one. I've told him that I would support him until he leaves office."
Rumors began to swirl Friday at the courthouse following Brooker's announcement about who would run for his seat during next year's election.
Germaine said that this weekend he will discuss the possibility of running for the position with his family.
"I've got plenty of experience, and I think I could do a wonderful job," said Germaine. "But I'm not going to make a decision until I have a chance to talk things over with my family. I think right now the focus should be on Luke and what he has done for our county."
Sebring Community Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Pete Pollard said that he was planning on filing paperwork at the Highlands County Elections Office in January to run for clerk. Pollard was defeated by Brooker in the 2004 election.
"I didn't really run a full campaign (in 2004). I didn't expect to win," said Pollard, who said he has over 20 years of administrative experience.
"I've been interested in the position for over 20 years," said Pollard. "I think I could provide new leadership and approaches to bring about positive changes."
Candidates have until June 20, 2008 to file paperwork with the elections office.
