Lockwood's Win Couples Golf Event

LAKE PLACID –– Making a move up the ladder.

That's what Bill and Barbara Lockwood did by finishing first in Saturday's Heartland Couples Golf tournament at Placid Lakes Country Club.

The Lockwood's shot a 71 in the two-person scramble format over the demanding Placid Lakes Country Club course, while the talented duo of Rodney and Lisa Davis also carded a 1-under-par 71.

A tiebreaker was required to decide first place in the 14-team event, and the Lockwood's won the Gross Division with a score of four on the third hole, while the Davis' carded a five.

The tournament was the second installment of the Heartland Couples Golf League, which played at River Greens Golf Course last month.

With the win, the Lockwood's picked up 75 valuable points to move into contention for first place in the six-month long league.

Ken and June Maloney finished third in the Gross Division with a 1-over 73.

Don and Sue Hall won the Net Division with a score of 14-under-par 58, while Mackie Chapman and Dee Paul placed second with a 62.

Frank and Handan Schneider claimed third with a 63.

Ken Maloney won closest-to-the-pin honors on hole No. 2, while June Maloney won with the closest shot on hole No. 11.

Ken Koon won closest-to-the-line honors on hole No. 4.

"We had a good turnout even though several of the teams that played in the first event couldn't play in this one," said Couples League organizer and River Greens professional Jason Beatty. "That's the nice thing about this league, if you miss an event ot two that's not a problem, because we take the top four scores."

After each event, a nice dinner is served and prizes are awarded.

"We play on Saturday's and we try to make it an enjoyable day with a fun round of golf and a delicious meal afterwards," Beatty said. "This is an opportunity for couples to spend some quality time together on the course and off."

The next tournament is slated for Jan. 19th at 1 p.m. at River Greens Golf Course.
