Poor Shooting Sinks Streaks

Published: December 9, 2007

BRADENTON — Senior Whitney Lee scored 11 points and seniors Brenita Grant and Chelsea Davis combined for 15 more Friday night, but poor shooting hampered the Sebring girls basketball team's effort in a 39-36 loss to Braden River.

The Streaks dropped their second league game of the season on a night they hit just 12 of 40 shots from the field (30 percent). Down seven at the end of the third, the Streaks got the game within two points late, but a large free-throw differential (Sebring attempted eight charity lobs in the second half, while Braden River shot 22) was too much for Sebring to overcome.

"It's not the reason we lost, but it was a factor," said coach Mike Lee. "Braden River played really well, and we really just shot the ball awful."

Having played the entire district once, the Blue Streaks now focus on Tuesday's home match with Palmetto, who defeated the Streaks earlier this season. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

"A lot depends on how we come out Tuesday," coach Lee said. "Last time we got beat, we reacted well."

BOYS BASKETBALL: Lake Placid 48, Fort Meade 27

LAKE PLACID — Senior Conlin Veley had 20 points and 14 rebounds and senior Josh Hickey added 14 points on Friday as the Lake Placid boys basketball team won its second straight game to get back .500 before district play with a 48-27 thumping of Fort Meade.

"We're continuing what we started [Thursday] night," said LP coach Levi Williams. "The guys are playing well for four quarters and putting things together defensively."

The Green Dragons (3-3) host Mulberry on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Avon Park 58, DeSoto 49

ARCADIA — Freshman guard Markida Hawthorne scored a game-high 17 points as Avon Park rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to beat DeSoto 58-49 in a Class 4A-District 10 girls basketball game on Friday night. The win improved the Red Devils to 5-2, 3-2. Avon Park hits the road for an away game against Palmetto on Monday night.
