Detectives Seek Fresh Leads In Tiller Murder

Published: December 8, 2007

SEBRING — While the details of the murder of Samuel M. Tiller, 82, in his home at 1610 Falcon Ave., remained closely guarded by Highlands County sheriff's detectives, they have turned to Heartland Crime Stoppers for fresh leads in the case.

Tiller was shot dead inside his home on the morning of Nov. 24. The home is located several blocks behind the Wal-Mart store in Sebring Country Estates.

"Mr. Tiller apparently surprised and confronted a burglar(s) inside his home when he was murdered," the flyer stated.

The introduction of the Heartland Crime Stoppers flyer did not mean the investigation has stalled, however.

"It's purpose is to elicit any leads from anyone out there who may know or may have seen something," said Sheriff's Maj. Mark Schrader on Wednesday.

Detectives have finished canvassing the neighborhood, according to Schrader.

"Detectives are still actively working the homicide case," he said.

Tiller's frantic wife reportedly called 911 when she heard a gunshot and heard a door close in her home at about 2:58 a.m. that Saturday. She thought her husband had been shot, she told dispatchers.

It took an autopsy by the District 10 Medical Examiner's Office the following Sunday to confirm that Tiller was killed as the result of a gunshot.

Schrader would not comment on how many shots hit Tiller or where. Nor would he say in what part of the house the shooting took place.

He said that it was investigative information known only to the sheriff's office and the killer.

Reports by residents of peddlers in the area selling air-cleaning products were followed up on by detectives, but Schrader refused to say if detectives contacted any of them.

Anyone who might have had such vendors at their door was asked to call sheriff's detectives and provide whatever details they could recall.

As detectives continue to follow leads, the sheriff's office asks the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the sheriff's office at 402-7200.

Anyone with specific information on this tragic homicide and wish to remain anonymous, may call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-888-226-TIPS, you could be eligible for a reward.
