FROSTPROOF — Controversial calls ran rampant during the clash between the Sebring boys basketball team and Frostproof on Tuesday night.
Questionable calls and turnovers saw a 13-point Sebring lead late in the third quarter dissipate to nothing, and the Bulldogs took advantage, knocking down 23-of-36 free throws for an 84-73 Class 4A-District 10 victory.
SHS head coach Princeton Harris was livid after the game and has made a formal complaint to the Florida State Referee Association. He said he's been asked to submit film and a letter to prevent the officiating crew from Tuesday's contest from working anymore Blue Streak games in the future.
"It was a tough loss and I refuse to make any excuses," Harris said. "But we couldn't buy a call in the second half. Everything started going south for us in the fourth quarter and the I have had comments from several people who were at that game commenting on the way the game was called.
"I could see the frustration on my kids and that was tough to take."
The loss put a damper on a 34-point night from Sam Robinson, who also hauled in six rebounds and knocked down four from 3-point land.
Blue Streak guards Chris Grubb and Javier Medina each scored 13 points, with Medina dishing out six assists for Sebring.
Frostproof capitalized on the number of trips to the foul line, going 23-for-36 from the free throw line in the second half, while the Blue Streaks went 8-for-19.
"We just have to go back to the drawing board," Harris said. "The team is playing hard, and I'm proud of them. We just need to take care of the ball better and get better and more consistent play from our guards."
Sebring is back in action today, when they travel to face district foe DeSoto.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Hardee 63, Avon Park 45
WAUCHULA — The Hardee boys basketball team jumped on Avon Park early and never looked back Tuesday night, downing the Red Devils 63-45 in a Class 4A-District 10 clash.
Leading 18-10 after the first quarter, the 'Cats pounced on Avon Park, exploding for a 20-9 game-changing run for a 19-point halftime lead, and Hardee held off the Red Devils for the win.
"We got poor guard play tonight," AP head coach Luther Clemons said. "Missed free throws and lay-ups hurt us."
Avon Park shot 30 percent from the charity stripe, while Hardee went 21-of-28 from the free throw line.
Freshman Alonzo Roberson led the Red Devils with 18 points, while center Cleveland Nobles chipped in 13 points in the loss.
