AVON PARK — Wanting to experience in person the artwork they have been studying, the South Florida Community College Art Club members are heading to New York City this winter.
But first the 14 students have to raise some money to make the $6,000 trip possible.
Although they have done several fundraisers this year, their most popular one is coming up this week - the all you can eat soup bowl lunch.
"Everyone around campus is really excited about it and looking forward to it," said Laura Wolfe, art club president. "They keep asking when it will be, so we are glad to have that support."
The lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 4 and Dec. 11, in Building B at the Highlands Campus. The menu for the $5 lunch includes about 10 different types of soup, made by artists in the community, and homemade bread and desserts, along with a drink.
Ceramic bowls, handmade by the art students, also can be purchased for $5 to eat the soup out of.
"It's a great deal for anyone who wants a good lunch, and we would love to see people from the community come out," said Cathy Futral, professor of art, who has chaperoned five trips to NYC. "And the money goes to a great cause. ... I think the cultural experience of this trip will be an important part of these students' education."
The group keeps a rigorous schedule during the trip, which starts with the Museum of Modern Art shortly after the plane lands.
The art enthusiasts will be going to four art museums in four days and also will have some free time to explore the city. Some plan to wait in line for discounted Broadway tickets, some will take the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, others will explore Ground Zero and most will head to China Town for some art supply shopping.
Neva Baird, secretary of the art club, went on last year's trip and is looking forward to returning.
"It's a really fast-paced trip because we have so much we want to see," Baird said. "I definitely didn't have time to see everything the first time, so I am excited to go back. I think I could spend weeks in one museum and not see everything."
This year she is looking forward to using her photography skills to take photographs of the city's architecture and riding on the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.
Wolfe said she is particularly interested in seeing the artwork from the Renaissance period in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
"I love the style of that time," Wolfe said. "The whole change that was taking place during that period led to beautiful art and inspired future artists as well."
She is also looking forward to seeing in person many of the paintings she is studying.
"Art has a different impact when you are standing right in front of it," Wolfe said. "It's usually different than you thought, sometimes it's bigger or brighter or even smaller, but it's always impressive to have it right there."
