The extension committee on sustainability for Highlands County is planning an information workshop on the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) for the agricultural industry and small businesses for Highlands County.
It will be held Aug. 25 at the Bert J. Harris Agricultural Center in Sebring.
REAP's purpose is to support rural development, while developing clean energy alternatives (bioenergy, geothermal, hydrogen, solar, wind and hydro power) and energy efficiency projects.
The USDA will present information on REAP Grants and Loan Guarantees, Florida's Natural will talk about their sustainability efforts and solar energy system, Progress Energy will provide information on incentives they offer.
Blake Linville will present an example that shows how to combine the different incentives, including a full financial breakdown on the investment in a solar energy system. Linville is also a state of Florida Certified Commercial Building Energy Rater, and will provide information on commercial building energy ratings in Florida.
The session will cover financial benefits available to rural small businesses and agricultural producers and will include information on how to access financial assistance, with a focus on solar power.
Companies that are linked to clean alternative energy and conservation are invited to participate with vendors' tables from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.
The conference format will consist of an information session in the morning with a half hour break, followed by an open session with vendors in the afternoon.
