Seminar set for starting small business

AVON PARK - "Steps To Start A Small Business" is a free seminar presented by the Small Business Development Center at USF. It will be held from 2 - 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 9 at South Florida Community College in Building T.

It is designed for persons thinking of starting a small business or who have started a business and want to make sure they did it correctly. Licenses, marketing, entity selection, and business planning are among the items discussed. The seminar will be presented by Bill McKown, certified business analyst with the SBDC.

Elwood rejoins law firm

SEBRING - Terry Elwood, a Sebring native who started her legal career more than 25 years ago with the law firm of James F. McCollum, has rejoined the Sebring firm.

Known as "T," Elwood married and moved to North Florida, where she became an estate paralegal.

She recently moved to Sebring and has joined the staff of McCollum and Cloud P.L., where she specializes in estate planning, probate, wills and trusts.

"I am proud to have 'T' back on our team," McCollum said in a press release. "Her expertise in estate planning will not only be an advantage for the firm but for the community as well."

Sebring chamber plans membership breakfast SEBRING - The Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce will hold its membership breakfast at 6:45 a.m. Dec. 8 at the Kenilworth Lodge.

The program will be a performance by the Sebring High School Show Choir starting at 7.

The breakfast will be sponsored by the Alan Jay Automotive Network.

Lake Placid chamber to hold luncheon

LAKE PLACID - Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce December Holiday Membership Luncheon will be held at noon Dec. 9 at the Lake Placid Elks Lodge.

The cost of the luncheon, which will be sponsored by Heartland National Bank, is $8 per person.

The entertainment will be provided by Heart of Highlands Singers.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to the chamber on or before Dec. 7. The telephone number is 465-4331.

The chamber, located at 18 N. Oak Ave., is collecting new unwrapped gifts for children and young adults to the age of 16. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Deadline for donating gifts is Dec 10.

EDC slates board meeting

SEBRING - The board of directors of the Highlands County Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development Commission will meet at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 9.

The meeting will be held at the office of board member Cliff Rhoades, 2141 Lakeview Drive, in Sebring.

A date is expected to be set for a joint workshop with the EDC board and the Highlands County Commission.

Belk to host chamber mixer

SEBRING - Belk will be hosting The Wrap-It-Up Chamber Mixer from 5 - 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at Lakeshore Mall in Sebring.

Those attending are asked to bring their business card to the mall entrance of the store and register to win a prize.

Hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
