Job Fair Draws Crowd At SFCC

AVON PARK - There was a huge turnout at Thursday's South Florida Community College Employment Fair, and the fact that unemployment is up in the area might be the reason.

Close to 500 people showed up to talk with representatives of more than 40 companies and government agencies, according to Paul Fox, director of the Campus Career Center. There were some job seekers who came to the event 30 minutes before it began in Building B on the Highlands campus in Avon Park.

The large crowd impressed employers.

"This is absolutely the best year," said Randy Leonard, operations manager of the Alan Jay Automotive Network. "We've seen over 60 people and all are very good prospects."

Leonard said the company has three open positions - sales consultant, service technician and entry-level car detailing.

"We're seeing more applicants showing interest in less-paying jobs," he said.

After many months of low unemployment, the rate has jumped by almost a full percentage point recently in Highlands.

The unemployment rate in September in Highlands was 5.2 percent. The rate was 5.3 percent in August and 4.3 percent in September 2006.

Hardee's rate was 5.5 percent last month and 5.6 percent in August. It was 5.1 percent in September of last year.

Fox said he appreciates the support of the chambers of commerce, the Highlands County Economic Development Commission and others.

"I'm elated that this community of employers partners with us to help people find good jobs," Fox said.
