Claims come from all sides concerning animal control

Aubre McAnally from Highlands County Animal Control holds a young beagle before giving it wormer medicine on Tuesday. Animal Control finds homes for about 70 percent of the dogs that go up for adoption, according to the department's director Darryl Scott.

Judy Spiegel wants sick animals in the custody of Highlands County Animal Control to be medically released before a mandatory 10-day hold so they can be treated. Animal Control, she feels, is not set up to take care of mothers and puppies, either.

HIGHLANDS COUNTY COMMISSION

Animal control advisory committee appointed

Dr. James Waller, a veterinarian with Citrus Animal Clinic, gives his recommendations on animal control to the county commissioners during the board's meeting on Tuesday.

Highlands County will have a board of five – not seven – citizens to make recommendations on animal control, but commissioners want them to have a laser-like focus.

You're never quite sure what to expect the first time you do something. For the folks at the Highlands County Family YMCA that meant hosting their first-ever Rock 'N Heartland Youth Triathlon Series race on Sunday and what they found out was people will definitely show up for a fun event.
